Question by Rachel: Is it usually plastic surgeons who do lip injections?
My friend just got juvederm put in her lips and the woman’s business card said she was a nurse. I was wondering if it’s usually nurses who do injectables at plastic surgeons offices and if so what kind of nurse is it.

Does mold/mould in a plastic tumbler leech into the plastic?
Question by tom_at_work: Does mold/mould in a plastic tumbler leech into the plastic?
I can’t find info on this because all the stuff is about injection molds, and I want to find out for an argument if mold will leech into the plastic. The girlfriend seems to think that just hot water and a rinse will make it safe to drink from again. Others disagree.

No mould won’t leech into plastic. Just rinse with Chlorine bleach solution and warm water to destroy mould and their spores.
Then rinse a few times with hot water before using tumbler.

Q&A: How can I make custom plastic pads on Motocross pants?
Question by Local Hero: How can I make custom plastic pads on Motocross pants?
I get many requests for custom plastic pads with the rider’s name to be sewn into the outside of their kevlar pants. The pants have plastic pads from the manufacturer (fox racing, no fear, etc.) I am just a local college guy and I wouldn’t be able to custom make injection molds very effectively and keep cost down. I had an idea to buy or make a flexible plastic and engrave the custom design from a rotary engraver similar to how 2 tone plastic nameplates are made. Here are my questions (finally!) If I want something like 2″x 8″x.125″ pieces of a flexable/rubbery plastic, would I make/mix it myself or buy it? And where/what would I go/get? I hope this isn’t too vague, I’m just not even sure what type of plastic would be best (flexible, durable). Any help would be appreciated!

You could ebay/Google for a seller of rubber sheets, possibly cut them yourself if they don’t offer them in the right size.

Math for Molders – Calculating Plastic Pressure (excerpt)
This excerpt discusses plastic pressure calculations and descibes how actual plastic pressure can be determined as a function of hydraulic pressure and the molding machine’s intensification ratio. This two-part training program was created for all personnel within the injection molding industry who would like to expand or fine tune their math skills. These courses will greatly benefit any participant of RJGs classroom-based, Master Molder SM Certification Series either as a primer or as follow-up training. A. A FANUC Robotics six axis M-710iB/70T top-loader robot pulls a molded plastic part from a large plastic injection molding cell. The M-710iB/70T then carries the part to a table and performs an automated tool change. The robot then trims and removes any plastic gating from the part with a cutting tool. After all gating has been removed, the robot performs another tool change and relocates the part to an out feed conveyor to complete the cycle. This automated process then starts over with a new molded plastic part. This six axis M-710iB/70T top-loader robot saves valuable floor space with its vertical mount above the machine, allowing easy access to the molded parts. The flexibility of this six axis robot allows it to perform multiple automated tasks in a wide range of work spaces.

Is the surface smooth? If it is, rough it up with 80-grit sand paper. Clean the surface really well, and then wash prime, or use a self-etching primer, then regular primer. Sand with 180 initially and then reprime if necessary. You’ll want to finish sand with 400 grit. If it has a “bumpy surface,” you’re not going to be able to rough up the surface. After you do the priming, just use a scotchbrite pad to sand. I painted my truck last year, including the inside plastic molding, which had the bumpy surface, and the plastic windshield wiper arms, which had the smooth surface. Paint is still on there and looks good.
If it’s too close to the engine, it will burn off.

What type of plastic is an alarm clock made from?
Question by Matty: What type of plastic is an alarm clock made from?
It’s just a simple bed side alarm clock. It doesn’t have to be the exact plastic. Just a plastic it could possibly be made from. I know the alarm clock has been made using injection moulding so the plastic must be able to be used for this type of form.
Need to know for technology. We had to disassemble something and then explain what each part was made from and why it was made from it.

Is it easier to mold silicone than plastic?
Question by Ray: Is it easier to mold silicone than plastic?
Let’s say I want to produce a certain small part, will it be easier to do it with silicone than plastic? I don’t mean do it yourself at home, I mean producing it at a quantity of few thousands. So therefore I need a mold.
To make such a mold for silicone part should be cheaper and simpler than an injection mold for plastic is it? You don’t have to worry about temperature…
I don’t know, how does the industry make silicone parts?

Answer by mike
Its difficult to answer without knowing anything about your part. They are equally easy to make, the cost may very depending on the complexity of the object. it will also matter what the material your object is made out of what you are making the mold for, and also what material you are making the mold out of. Plastic and silicone cast be made from a lot of different methods, like injection, slush cast and others. An injection mold may work great for something like a garbage can, but if you are making a sculpture of a human head, silicone will provide better results but in that case would be more expensive for that kind of application. There really are too many variables without having any idea what you are making
