I need help Designing a Hydraulic Scenario for school?

Question by Robert Obrien: I need help Designing a Hydraulic Scenario for school?
Having trouble with this piece in class…
Scenario
I work for a company that builds plastic injection molding machines. my job is to design a hydraulic circuit that will perform the folowing operations:
Open and close a mold with a hydraulic cylinder. (i understand this one)
Powedr a hydraulic motor to trun a large screw that feeds hot plastic into the mold. (i also understand this.)

(what i dont understand)
The motor and the cylinder should be capable of operating separetely, BUT THE MOTOR SHOULD ONLY BE ABLE TO TURN WHEN THE MOLD IS CLAMPED.

how can i do that?

Best answer:

Answer by Wingman
Without seeing the injection molding machine, all I can suggest is to add some kind of limit/ micro switch to the mold hydraulic cylinder or the moving part of the mold door.

This limit/ micro switch can then be wired in series with the Start push button for the hydraulic motor.

Wire it up as a normally closed circuit when the door is clamped.

Need help targeting the most rapidly growing US manufacturing sectors?

Question by Mary K: Need help targeting the most rapidly growing US manufacturing sectors?
I am trying to figure out what kind of finished goods manufacturing is still done in the US? Are there any areas that are actually increasing their business?

My reason for the questions is that I work for a small injection molder (plastics) and we just lost a big customer to a mexican molder. Cheap labor, nafta, no environmental regs, etc….

Most of our customers are either hurting (like automotive industry) or appliance makers, which are also slowing down.

We offer some secondary services such as assembly, painting, printing, etc.

Just looking for help to try to find areas to target to here in the US since it seems like lots of our business is moving out of the country. Any suggestions?

Trying to keep this positive, any suggestions of areas to target or groups to join or places to look?

I know there are a lot of smart ppl that answer here on yahoo, hoping someone can give me a spark.
To answer the question about what we do…
We have from 20 to 440 T machines, so mainly smaller precision parts.

Some things we mold are:

**appliance knobs, buttons handles, bezels (painted hi- low or numbers)
**plastic water and polution filters
**electronics cases, buttons,
**automotive cases, covers, knobs, buttons, light tubes, reflectors, )
mostly under hood, part of guages in dash or inside the door frame parts)
** medical cases (we are not clean room or white room though, so not too much medical)
Consumer goods- mop assemblies, small buckets, scrapers, etx.
We do some pretty complicated precise parts and do them well. Not optics, but fairly difficult.

I need a dissolvable plastic that loses anywhere from 1 gram to 30 grams if submerged in water for a week?

Question by jack h: I need a dissolvable plastic that loses anywhere from 1 gram to 30 grams if submerged in water for a week?
I need a dissolvable plastic, something that dissolves relatively fast 1-30 grams in a week of being fully submerged in water. I know about PLA and PLGA and all that nonsense, but I dont know the ratio… will I have to do that myself? It can be any form of solid as I am injection molding it.

I know the ratio will determine the rate, I am just trying to determine if these can plastics be designed to dissolve relatively quickly?

No plastic but maybe pseudo-plastic. Look for some alcoholic mixtures of carbohydrogens.

As someone who has ordered from China I feel your pain. We are in this really awkward point in between it being cheaper to order from China and it being cheaper to order within the US. It stinks. Machinery happens to be the one thing that is really hard to find within the US. You would be better off dealing with China for one last time.
Best of Luck!

There are several commercially available purging compounds that work quite well. I’m assuming you want the quick fix though. When I don’t have any of the commercial stuff available I usually reach for some acrylic regrind that I have lots of on hand and was given by another molder. If you have any blowing agent this also works well.
Here’s an old molders trick try sprinkling a little Baking Soda into the mix and crank up the temps a bit, a few drops of water won’t hurt either. It might foam up a bit but it’ll scrub the residuals out.

All You Need To Know About Plastic Moulding

All You Need To Know About Plastic Moulding

We cannot imagine a world without plastics. Plastics have found their importance in almost all application ranging from household items to complicated research equipments. Though there were controversies that the plastics pose a threat to the environment, the advancements in plastic manufacturing technologies have given birth to the eco-friendly plastics. Plastic manufacturers can now recycle and create new plastic products out of the used plastics. You will be well aware of the fact that injection moulding is widely used to manufacture the plastic products. Today’s plastic moulding is very much advanced and very different from what was originally invented. Just keep on reading the article to know all about the plastic moulding techniques.

A Little History

Plastic moulding is not a new concept developed in the 21st century. Moulding plastics into useful products exits since the origin of manmade plastic in the year 1851. The process of heating plastics and melting the molten material to obtain the shape of the mould is the basic concept behind plastic moulding. Though the concept of plastic moulding remains the same today, this technology has seen many advancements. Plastic moulding received huge importance during the period of Second World War due to the demand for the plastic medical equipments. Infact the plastic manufacturers where struggling to meet the demand for the plastic products during this period. This is period when the plastic moulding industry got a new shift towards development.

Current Plastic Moulding Techniques

Though the main concept of plastic moulding remains the same, the equipments used by the plastic manufacturers have changed a lot. With the integration of latest computer technologies the production rate of plastic moulding is greatly increased today. Unlike the olden days only when only fresh plastic materials were moulded to useful products, today with environmental awareness on the rise, plastic moulding concentrates on using recycled materials. Moreover, the advancements in plastic moulding technology has made it possible to manufacture products in any complicated shapes.

The Applications Of Modern Plastic Moulding

The applications of plastic injection moulding are virtually unlimited. Starting from simple plastic carry bags to complicated lifesaving devices – every plastic product manufactured today are through plastic injection moulding. Some of the common applications of plastic moulding are the manufacturing of products such as packaging bags, automobile parts, beverage cans and bottles, computer accessories etc.

The Future Of Plastic Moulding

You will be well aware of the fact that the use of plastics is banned in certain areas of all countries. People think that this may end the plastic manufacturing as environmental pollution is a major concern today. However, with the introduction of the recyclable plastics, the plastic industry has got a rebirth. Afterall, as already said, we cannot imagine a world without plastics.

R.E Davison is known in industy by two leading brands: RED Composites and Gloda Manufacturing and offer services in 2 major areas including plastic moulding. RED Composites for Thermoset plastic and plastic injection moulding for metal pressing and deep drawing for both the Australian and export market.

do you need a cooling tower to cool the molten plastic from the plastic injection molding machine?

Question by charLee: do you need a cooling tower to cool the molten plastic from the plastic injection molding machine?
how does the molten plastic inside the mold cool? does is cool all by itself? please help…i am really confused…do you know how many kw cooling towers consume per hour?

Best answer:

Answer by Aydin
The most economic answer is not. I mean you don’t need any cooling tower but it depends on the situation and amount of plastic which you are injected in mold.
As I saw different cases for commen mold they don’t use any cooling equipment and plastic cools down itself.
