DOE for Injection Molding – Part5
Mike Groleau of RJG, describes why–despite their challenges within Injection Molding–Design of Experiments (DOE) can be a valuable tool for centering a process, particularly for medical molding applications.
Press selection based upon plastic viscosity required for medical part injection molding. Ken Fassett details how medical device injection molders can benefit from using RJG scientific injection moulding technologies and methodologies to make the validation process simpler, less costly and less time consuming. Systematic approach to validation of plastic injection moldings.

Custom Injection Molding Machine
Injection molding machine demonstrating an 18 gram shot through 4 valve gates of an integrated hot manifold. Machines operate using an entirely different process than conventional injection molding machines. This leads to the small size, modest power requirements (less than 1.5kw/hrs of 220v single phase), instant start-up (no purging) and no experience required to operate it and compete globally on cost. THIEME Corporation, St. Charles, IL. www.thieme-us.com. Basic Reaction Injection Molding Operation showing rigid light density foam encapsulation of metal inserts for an automotive application (EA knee bolster). Use of robot technology and several endforms are used. The video shows the basic premise of RIM polyurethane foam molding. We specialize in large format RIM molding and have capabiliy to make single shot parts up to 75 lbs in a single shot (or 6′ x 6′ x 2′). With our higher density foam systems, such as Prism, Bayflex or Baydur products, this is an excellent process for medical device enclosures, analytical housings and structural parts needing low annual volume production (200-20000 parts per year). This video shows an automotive part that is mid to high volume in annual use (1000-1000000 parts per year). Learn more about our large format part molding, multi-wall thickness molding materials and impact RIM materials, write Mike at our E-mail address of: my@thieme-us.com or call Michael Young 248-628-2930. Fred Phillips of SIGMA Plastic Services discusses SIGMASOFT® generates simulations in a fundamentally different way than traditional simulation tools. When process simulation is coupled with all of the mold components, the entire injection mold and process is simulated, rather than assumed. This allows users to make accurate and confident decisions about tooling designs and process parameters. These capabilities will be shown through a powerpoint presentation and software demonstration. Fred Phillips with SIGMA Plastic Services, Inc. offers a series of webinars to present SIGMASOFT®: The Next Generation of Injection Molding Polymer Simulation. This webinar series will cover a variety of SIGMASOFT® benefits and capabilities. If injection molded plastic or rubber parts are critical to the success of your business, you will benefit from attending these webinars. SIGMASOFT® is utilized by Part Designers, Mold Designers, Project Engineers, Process Engineers, Quality Engineers, CAE/FEA Analysts, R&D Teams, Plastics Business Owners, Engineering Management and Production Management. When it comes to making the right design, tooling, and process decisions, the accuracy of simulation makes all the difference. The reason SIGMASOFT® simulations are so accurate is rooted in its history. The core simulation physics and programming in SIGMASOFT® were developed by the same company that makes MAGMASOFT® – the foundry and die casting industry’s de facto standard for metal casting …
