Can i get solvent-melted polystyrene from model kits to cure as hard as before I melted it?
Question by Fungyi: Can i get solvent-melted polystyrene from model kits to cure as hard as before I melted it?
I’ve been making some plastic coatings for wood by dissolving polystyrene (from plastic model kits) into paint thinner in room temperature. So far, i’ve brushed a number of layers throughout one week to accumulate a solidified film, thickness of about .25 millimeters. However, i noticed that my melted polystyrene is no where as hard (resistence to deformation/tensile strength) as before i melted it…
Do solvents degrade a plastic by ~entering~ it? In my case, do the solvents EVER fully evaporate? Even if i bake it, will my solvent-melted plastic ever be as strong as the injection-molded version?
…i scrapped some old projects with acrylic lacquer paints on it painted YEARS ago, & i could still dent the film with just my FINGER NAILS. On the other hand, the same kind of paint required a KNIFE to scrap off its bottle after only months of opening it. What’s the deal?
ps please don’t suggest to use something other than polystyrene; i’m interested in polystyrene only
the outcome i’m looking for is simply the hardest coating i can get to cover wood

the polystyrene has oil in it ant the solvent dilluted it, at where I work we vacuum form the piece on the wood, taking a sheet of styrene, heating to wave point, and lowering onto the mold all in one action, what outcome are you looking for??

I need a dissolvable plastic that loses anywhere from 1 gram to 30 grams if submerged in water for a week?
Question by jack h: I need a dissolvable plastic that loses anywhere from 1 gram to 30 grams if submerged in water for a week?
I need a dissolvable plastic, something that dissolves relatively fast 1-30 grams in a week of being fully submerged in water. I know about PLA and PLGA and all that nonsense, but I dont know the ratio… will I have to do that myself? It can be any form of solid as I am injection molding it.
I know the ratio will determine the rate, I am just trying to determine if these can plastics be designed to dissolve relatively quickly?

No plastic but maybe pseudo-plastic. Look for some alcoholic mixtures of carbohydrogens.

What type of plastic is an alarm clock made from?
Question by Matty: What type of plastic is an alarm clock made from?
It’s just a simple bed side alarm clock. It doesn’t have to be the exact plastic. Just a plastic it could possibly be made from. I know the alarm clock has been made using injection moulding so the plastic must be able to be used for this type of form.
Need to know for technology. We had to disassemble something and then explain what each part was made from and why it was made from it.

92 festiva oil coming up on motor and oil in the plastic going from the breather to the fuel injection port?
Question by hacker: 92 festiva oil coming up on motor and oil in the plastic going from the breather to the fuel injection port?
I had a new timing belt put on prior to this but has never had any power since. I had the engine totally overhauled about a year ago and it ran fine but since I replaced the timingbelt it hasn’t ran right sence. there is no power at all. I replaced the PCV valve but still get oil back in the breather area from breather to fuel injector. The engine shuts off real fast like its to tight and there is oil that drips on the floor, uses about a half quart every 30 or 40 miles. There is blue smoke that comes out periodically but not all the time. There is a small water leak on the floor, could this be from the water pump leaking on the timing belt ,and cause the timing belt to jump time.Sometime it is hard to start when you turn it off so I let run to get back home. Have put new plugs and coil wire in it. What could be my problem. THANKS

There are several commercially available purging compounds that work quite well. I’m assuming you want the quick fix though. When I don’t have any of the commercial stuff available I usually reach for some acrylic regrind that I have lots of on hand and was given by another molder. If you have any blowing agent this also works well.
Here’s an old molders trick try sprinkling a little Baking Soda into the mix and crank up the temps a bit, a few drops of water won’t hurt either. It might foam up a bit but it’ll scrub the residuals out.

do you need a cooling tower to cool the molten plastic from the plastic injection molding machine?
Question by charLee: do you need a cooling tower to cool the molten plastic from the plastic injection molding machine?
how does the molten plastic inside the mold cool? does is cool all by itself? please help…i am really confused…do you know how many kw cooling towers consume per hour?

Answer by Aydin
The most economic answer is not. I mean you don’t need any cooling tower but it depends on the situation and amount of plastic which you are injected in mold.
As I saw different cases for commen mold they don’t use any cooling equipment and plastic cools down itself.
