Question by Dee-dee: I have a serious fear of dental procedures. Had to have crown prep done 3 weeks ago. My dr. prescribed xanax?
a couple months ago because I was under major stress at work. For the dental procedure, she had me take my regular dose of Xanax 1mg ER (2 in the am, and one mid-afternoon), and then instructed me to take 2 regular xanax 0.5mg tablets one hour before appt. Dentist spoke with dr and confirmed dosage. When I got to the dentist, they started me on nitrous, which didn’t seem to be working very well. After waiting for what seemed like forever, dentist decided to go ahead and start the numbing process. First used numbing gel, then injections…three or four, I think to numb me enough. He was very gentle, and explained every step before and during. I was okay until he started the drill…as soon as I heard the sound, I braced myself and pulled away from it. Nitrous + drugs must have finally kicked in, because I don’t remember anything until the assistant put the mold/material in my mouth, and the next thing I knew I was done, and temporary crown had been cemented in. Thursday, I go for my permanent crown. Already getting nervous…would it be reasonable to request nitrous/numbing for placement, or am I being a huge crybaby? (BTW…weaning off xanax, down to 1mg er in am only…might that be part of my anxiety issue?)

If you are extremely nervous, and it seems like you are, then requesting nitrous for the insertion is not unreasonable. My only suggestion would be to find a dentist who does cerec restorations in one visit that also offers sedation dentistry. This way it would only be one visit in the future.
