3D MID: Cost of LDS
3D MID: Cost of LDS (selectconnecttech.com) Today we have the fourth episode in a series featuring Stephan Schmidt, President of LPKF USA. Stephan and I recently sat down to discuss LDS, where it is utilized today and where it is going in the near future. I hope you find the conversation as interesting as I did. Please turn up your volume for the conversation as the microphone was experiencing some technical difficulties. Today Stephan answers the questions What are the costs associated with LDS? and What makes LDS a better solution? To receive updates via email register for 3D MID Blog now. Question for anyone who knows cost accounting?
Question by Ckar87: Question for anyone who knows cost accounting?
I’m having a little trouble with my accounting homework, so anyone that has taken accounting or knows about cost accounting, help would be greatly appreciated
Dayton Extruded Plastics is a manufacturer of injection-molded extrusions. Scrapped or defective extrusions were ground into powder and fed back into the extruders as raw materials. Defective extrusions were inspected during line work and in handling returns from customers; they were ground up in special grinding machines and mixed with new raw material and reused in manually controlled injection molding machines. The molding machines use utilities provided for the main manufacturing facility. After grinding, maintenance and cleanup of the facilities were performed by general maintenance personnel. Because all scrapped extruders were reused in this way, company management felt that the cost of the scrap was “free”. The company’s traditional cost accounting system did not associate any cost with the cost of processing scrap.
Required:
Explain why the company’s traditional cost accounting system is giving misleading results related to Dayton Extruded Plastics processing of scrap.

Amazing, I was a cost accountant in a plastics company. However I suspect that your teacher will not like my answer.
Not all plastics can be re-ground. Where I worked, what could be re-ground was limited to a maximum of 5% of the mixture (95% new and 5% re-grind) in new product.
The cost of the inspectors can be ignored since they would be there any way to inspect all the product. You incur no extra cost by having the inspectors toss the rejects into a bin. the cost of the person who collect the reject bins can be ignored since they would have to toss the rejects into the trash if not re-ground.
The special machine (and it is not that special or costly) costs, as does the cost of the person that that operates it.
GAPP would require you to collects those costs and include them in the re-grind inventory. If the costs were 1,000 for depreciation and labor to regrind 1,000 lbs, then your cost of the regrind is .00 (ignoring the initial cost of the material. If your have 2 lb of re-grind left, you have 1.00 of additional inventory.
However the materiality provision would come into play. for it to be worth to collect you would need a very high reject rate. If you do, they the company is failing anyway. If your have one reject in 5,000 then the amount of re-grind is negligible

how much does a polypropylene plastic production cost?

how much would it cost using injection molding process?

You mean if you ask a plastic molder to produce parts for you? Just very ballpark – say for a small PP part the size of a wallet, unit cost is likey less than , maybe just cents. But the upfront tooling cost is large: say ,000 for a small, basic injection-molding tool. Tooling can be over ,000 for larger, more intricate parts.
Depends a lot on your product’s size and complexity and how much volume you want to make, of course….
Hope this helps – but if you’re talking about buying a machine and setting up your own factory it’s a much bigger question.

3 Main Cost Drivers in Injection Moulding
3 Main Cost Drivers in Injection Moulding
Injection moulding is an efficient and effective way of producing quality plastic goods. Quality is often assured, but as with any production process, there are factors to consider when cost is an issue. It is usually the cheapest way of manufacturing a product, but that doesn’t mean it won’t necessarily be expensive.
The cost of injection moulding may in part be dependant on the quality of the materials used, size and intricacy of the part, but here’s a rundown of the three biggest cost drivers when it comes to injection moulding.
Part design. A good part design will save a lot of money. When designing a part to be injection moulded, may things must be taken into consideration. For maximum efficiency, a part will be designed with consideration for materials, cooling time and the labour needed to create the tool. Bad part design will cost a lot of time and wasted effort. A badly designed part will cause rejects, slower cycle times (including cooling time) and extra labour. The part may not be designed well for tooling — especially if a part is complicated or intricate — and may require extra or special tooling costs. A part may be designed so that it still requires post-moulding work, adding yet more labour. This is not taking into account transport and packing costs; a good design will account for space requirements when in storage and shipment. Good part design reduces the costs of plastic moulding dramatically.
Tooling. The quality of the mould creation will alter the cost of injection moulding to a large extent. A mould’s design limitation is the parting line — the line which divides the two halves of the mould, the core and the cavity. This must be carefully considered when tooling a mould. For instance, a protruding portion of the mould, if the mould is correctly tooled, can be orientated along the parting line. If the mould is incorrectly tooled, however, this will create an undercut or overcut, and the part will snag in the mould. This will require labour to fix and will cost precious time that could be being used to create more parts.
Tool design. The quality of your tool design will impact immediately on both the quality and production cost of your finished part. Nothing accounts for quality, and the reliability of a tool that will deliver what you want every time will outstrip your initial investment in a very short amount of time. For instance, a cheaper injection moulding tool will only save you money in the short term. Long term, it’s lack of reliability and slow running time is likely to become a liability. Investing in a quality tool design specifically matching your needs and requirements will ensure you will have a consistently high-quality end product.
Taking time to consider your needs will bring you a worthwhile return on your investment. By insisting on good part design, tooling and tool design, you are assured a relatively stress-less endeavour when setting out to produce your product.

A rough ball park figure for the cost of an injection moulder for small components? (Including everything.?
Question by $i: A rough ball park figure for the cost of an injection moulder for small components? (Including everything.?
I just wanted to know out of interest how much plastic injection moulders cost designed to produce small components (the size of a brick.) Including the mould and all of the machinery. I’m just looking for a rough estimate (£100,000? £1000,000?) Thanks.

Plastic mold injection: approximately how much it cost?

I want to produce something like this:

The letters are separate and are chrome plated. How much would it cost to produce and chrome plate 500 letter assuming it is 1x2x.25 inch and are made of plastic?
Best answer:
Answer by tlbs101
Setup charges are the ‘killer’ to a small project like this. The per-letter cost will be pennies, but it will cost several thousand US$ as a setup charge.
The injection molding company *may* have a standard letter-set mold in stock, so that may save a bundle. You’d have to check with each company to find out if they have letters in stock. Be sure and ask if they do the chrome plating, too.
Even if they have a set of letter molds on-the-shelf, they may charge a minimum that will run in the US00’s.

Q&A: Plastic injection mold – cost estimate?
Question by Skt: Plastic injection mold – cost estimate?
I think most of you would have seen the SD-card case, the clear plastic one, ~ 2″ x 1.5″ x 0.5″. I don’t know if I can post web links, here is one sample image,

Can any one give me a ballpark number for how much the injection molding would cost for a product like that? In the US vs in China?
Thanks.

High production multi-cavity hardened steel, or low production, single cavity aluminum (or maybe even epoxy)?
Since cases are already available, I’m guessing you might want a limited run with a special logo for some promotional use. But then again you ask about China…
I don’t really know, but I’d guess several thousand for the first case, and a few to several hundred for the second case (US dollars)
But if you can sell the cases for .33 each (3 for .99) you should get your money back pretty quick. Of course that is a really big IF, I wonder if inanycase.com has ever sold any of those cases at that price? that seems insanely high. I could believe 12 for .99 (not that anyone would need 12, since most cards come in a case to start with)
