The 2010 Awards for Excellence in Powder Metallurgy are organised by the European Powder Metallurgy Association (EPMA) and coincided with the World PM2010 Congress & Exhibition, Florence, Italy. The 2010 EPMA Awards for Excellence in Powder Metallurgy Competition helps to recognise and promote powder metallurgy (PM) components, materials and equipment as cost effective and real alternatives to competing manufacturing processes. OBE – Locking Device for Spectacles For this revolutionary and extremely small locking device for spring hinges in spectacles the minimized size is combined with a complex shape due to the huge quantity per year needed – it is produced in a 32 cavity mould. This component was designed from the beginning as a part made out of metal injection moulding.This component of only 0.028 g needs a high precision which only Metal Injection Moulding could guarantee. For a safe locking function the geometry of the part had to be designed with special features.
