plastic or some resin is melted in a barrell and mixed via an auger. forming dies (whatever form you are molding) are at the end of the barrell. hydraulic or electric rams hold the forms in place and the mold is filled with melted compound.

You have a mold that you inject under high pressure molten plastic in to . Then you let it cool. The mold will probably part and gravity will have the new plastic part fall to a bin below.

I work in the plastic injection mould industry. First of all, “injection” is misleading because the liquid plastic is shot into them at around 12,000 psi. There are two basic parts to a mould, the core and the cavity. The “part” is that part of the mould that the plastic actually fills. Surrounding that is “seal-off”, a border that contains the plastic and which must form a perfect seal to prevent “flash”. After injection, water is pumped throught the mould via water lines and cools the plastic. After the core and the cavity are separated in the press, the hydraulic-operated “ejection box” drives ejection pins up through the mould and kicks the part out. Mould steel for the automotive industry is usually P-20 and must survive several million cycles.
