Q&A: about merc two stroke oil injection

Question by walker: about merc two stroke oil injection
I just purchaced a boat with a 1993 2.5 litre 175 merc. When I bought the boat, the guy told me that the oil pump was driven off of a plastic gear, connected to the crankshaft. my question is, how reliable is this gear. also, I have took the cover off and seen that the oil injection unit is just spliced into the fuel line, i think, if i looked right. can i just buy a quarter inch nipple and by-pass the whole thing, or is there more to it than that?????????????

My 2.5 is a different model than yours, i have the HP sport(250hp) but the concept is the same. If you suspect the oil pump, or are a performance boater, you can disconnect and bypass the oil pump and run mixed fuel as i did. Those nylon (not plastic) gears are quite reliable, but as with anything, the harder you run it, the greater the chance for failure. I use a very oil-rich mix, 30:1, it’s cheaper to replace spark plugs than pistons.
