Q&A: why is China trying to buy up all our scrap carpet nylon? Can you chemically separate 6,6 polymers safely?
Question by Leon Phelps: why is China trying to buy up all our scrap carpet nylon? Can you chemically separate 6,6 polymers safely?
http://www.recycle.net/Plastic/nylon/xv102000.html
A buyer from China contacted my firm yesterday looking to purchase our Nylon 6,6 fiber waste. They stated their employer was a Chinese buyer looking to recycle 6,6 fiber back into new carpet. I stopped the salesperson and said that that was impossible. I’m under the impression that 6,6 nylon has molecular bonds too strong to be De-polymerized into monomers to make new carpet fiber again. 6,6 fiber can only be made into denser materials like auto parts and injection molded stuff…not something as delicate as carpet fiber. So what gives? Is there a way to chemically separate the polymers in 6,6 fibers that is sooooo toxic they can only do it in China? I found the link above to further my conspiracy theory. What are you up to China? How come you can apparently get a cradle to cradle 6,6 nylon and the US can’t? Help us superman!!!

I make small list
for you to start
You right
I copy paste
Can’t fool you
Common plastics and uses

Food containers, appliances, car fenders (bumpers).
Polystyrene (PS)
Packaging foam, food containers, disposable cups, plates, cutlery, CD and cassette boxes.
High impact polystyrene (HIPS)
fridge liners, food packaging, vending cups.
Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)
Electronic equipment cases (e.g., computer monitors, printers, keyboards), drainage pipe.

Can i get solvent-melted polystyrene from model kits to cure as hard as before I melted it?
Question by Fungyi: Can i get solvent-melted polystyrene from model kits to cure as hard as before I melted it?
I’ve been making some plastic coatings for wood by dissolving polystyrene (from plastic model kits) into paint thinner in room temperature. So far, i’ve brushed a number of layers throughout one week to accumulate a solidified film, thickness of about .25 millimeters. However, i noticed that my melted polystyrene is no where as hard (resistence to deformation/tensile strength) as before i melted it…
Do solvents degrade a plastic by ~entering~ it? In my case, do the solvents EVER fully evaporate? Even if i bake it, will my solvent-melted plastic ever be as strong as the injection-molded version?
…i scrapped some old projects with acrylic lacquer paints on it painted YEARS ago, & i could still dent the film with just my FINGER NAILS. On the other hand, the same kind of paint required a KNIFE to scrap off its bottle after only months of opening it. What’s the deal?
ps please don’t suggest to use something other than polystyrene; i’m interested in polystyrene only
the outcome i’m looking for is simply the hardest coating i can get to cover wood
Best answer:
Answer by David W
the polystyrene has oil in it ant the solvent dilluted it, at where I work we vacuum form the piece on the wood, taking a sheet of styrene, heating to wave point, and lowering onto the mold all in one action, what outcome are you looking for??

Statistics and Probability….Help Please???
Question by kelz: Statistics and Probability….Help Please???
Two different types of injection-molding machines are used to form plastic parts. A part is considered defective if it has excessive shrinkage or is discolored. Two random samples, each of size 300, are selected, and 16 are defective parts are found in the sample from machine 1 while 8 defective parts are found in the sample from machine 2. Is it reasonable to conclude that both machines produce the same fraction of defective parts?
(a) Is it reasonable to conclude that both machines produce the same fraction of defective parts? Use alpha 0.05
(b) Construct a 95% confidence interval on the difference in the two fractions defective.
Best answer:
Answer by Blah
Construct the confidence interval in part b first. If the difference in proportion defective lies outside the interval, then it is NOT reasonable to conclude that they are the same.
To construct the confidence interval:
Calculate the proportion defective and standard deviation (using the binomial formula for stdev) for each machine.
Calculate the difference in proportion defective. Then calculate the standard deviation of the difference by taking the square root of the sum of the individual standard deviations squared. I.e. S_diff = sqrt (s1^2+s2^2).
The Z-value (switching to the normal distribution) corresponding to .475 (half of 95%) is 1.96 (memorize this number — you will use it often). The confidence interval of the difference about a mean of 0 (we’re interested in whether they defect rate is the same — meaning that the difference is zero) is between -1.96*S_diff (rounded to the nearest integer) and +1.96*S_diff (rounded to the nearest integer).
