Gender: biological or social construct? Essentialist or constructionist? How do you explain transsexuals?

Question by Russell H: Gender: biological or social construct? Essentialist or constructionist? How do you explain transsexuals?
One of the things that I’ve noticed is that the majority of feminists I’ve heard from or spoke to agree more or less with the constructionist view than the biological essentialist, less grounded in hard science and more from social science literature. As we’re seeing the more we discover about gender and the pre-natal process of androgenization of the brain in the second semester, the more it collides with the more sociological constructionist stand-point.

For those who doubt me, what about the case of David Reimer, a guy whose penis was inadvertently damaged during circumcision, and afterwards was given a vagina, was raised as a female, but after many years of sex reassignment and estrogen injections, never identified as female, didn’t act like a female, and described the experiences as traumatic rather than therapeutic.
The thing is with the constructionist view, if the mind is a blank page, then it is changeable, and if that’s changeable then society’s changeable. The problem with the theory that personality and gender differences are entirely the result of environment, not heredity, is that it is indeed a prescription for just the kind of coercion and tyranny that most conspicuously tried to exploit its possibilities: if everything that we are is just socialization, then the reasonable thing is to socialize us in the best way possible, and that would be through the agency of those who know best. Those who know best, in turn, would be those politically favoured, or at least self-appointed with enough fanfare.
The socialization, in turn, would be a thorough indoctrination which, if done to adults, would have been called brain washing — but then the brain was supposed to have been blank in the first place. Cambodia took this to the logical extreme: if you simply kill the parents, then that leaves the children in the hands of the state by default.
Fortunately, the last line of defence against totalitarianism was the simple fact of human nature. All the power of the state could not really make the “New Man,” and no amount of lies could cover that up indefinitely. The Soviet Union crumbled to reveal the people of 1913 emerging from the shadows, wanting the same things out of life that they did then, without all the bombast, promises, fanfare, and lies.
Meanwhile, the legal regime promoted by feminism in the West serves to damage the position of housewives and mothers, with “no fault” divorce (now being rethought even by feminists), anti-discrimination law and “affirmative action” to promote women and disadvantage traditional breadwinner males in the workplace, and, just as importantly, the denigration of the very idea that a husband owes support to his wife.
If the “personal is political”, then every single action we perform in our house has political connotations, in the end capitalism produces the idea that the personal and political are separate.
Maybe you could say Marxism and Feminism are similar in more ways than one, Marxism was designed to destroy classes in the way Gender Feminism was designed to destroy gender, and therefore mould society into their own ideologies.

Are you an essentialist or a constructionist, or a combination?
Of course transsexuals are not natural, but that doesn’t mean they’re socialised to want to be the opposite sex to that of their body. In other words if a transexual has a male body but a female brain, do you think that he was socialised to feel and want to be a woman.

Answer by Libertad V
Actually there’s a form of marxist feminist which support your point of view since understand as materialism as the cause of male domination. Well… in my point of view that’s not very accurate. Male domination (and role gender but not gender by itself) is a social construction. The trans is the best example, they have born into a body who decided is not according wiht what they are, so they can change the materia in order to fit to her or his individual identity, which can’t be decided for nature or society.

And marxism is not “designed” and is not a tool, is a theory to explain the power and the relation on power relationships and the production media

Q&A: I have a serious fear of dental procedures. Had to have crown prep done 3 weeks ago. My dr. prescribed xanax?

Question by Dee-dee: I have a serious fear of dental procedures. Had to have crown prep done 3 weeks ago. My dr. prescribed xanax?
a couple months ago because I was under major stress at work. For the dental procedure, she had me take my regular dose of Xanax 1mg ER (2 in the am, and one mid-afternoon), and then instructed me to take 2 regular xanax 0.5mg tablets one hour before appt. Dentist spoke with dr and confirmed dosage. When I got to the dentist, they started me on nitrous, which didn’t seem to be working very well. After waiting for what seemed like forever, dentist decided to go ahead and start the numbing process. First used numbing gel, then injections…three or four, I think to numb me enough. He was very gentle, and explained every step before and during. I was okay until he started the drill…as soon as I heard the sound, I braced myself and pulled away from it. Nitrous + drugs must have finally kicked in, because I don’t remember anything until the assistant put the mold/material in my mouth, and the next thing I knew I was done, and temporary crown had been cemented in. Thursday, I go for my permanent crown. Already getting nervous…would it be reasonable to request nitrous/numbing for placement, or am I being a huge crybaby? (BTW…weaning off xanax, down to 1mg er in am only…might that be part of my anxiety issue?)

Best answer:

Answer by Moogly4321
If you are extremely nervous, and it seems like you are, then requesting nitrous for the insertion is not unreasonable. My only suggestion would be to find a dentist who does cerec restorations in one visit that also offers sedation dentistry. This way it would only be one visit in the future.

Q&A: Can your boss make you do things not on your job description?

Question by skipper: Can your boss make you do things not on your job description?
I was hired to to 1 job and now for over a year I have been doing my job plus another important job. I asked my boss for a title change and more money money and his response was” We can have you do anything we want”. I understand that sometimes you are needed to pick up the slack when others maybe out. But I have taken on the whole Kanban process for our plant. This is a very important function and I am the only at our plant that does it. It is not on my job description as I am listed as INJECTION MOLDING SR. If i say I dont want to do it anymore they will hold it against me. What good is a job description if they can make you do whatever they want. P.S. I work in California if that matters.

(1) I don’t know if this is one of your options, but I believe that “units produced” should be the answer for (E) Quality control and possibly (A).
(2) (3) Sorry, I can’t be any help with these two.
(4) I believe this question wasn’t clear (I’ve found it happens a lot). I think it was supposed to have read “Activity-based costing is most appropriate to use when DIRECT labor costs are a ?. In which case, the answer would be (A).
(5) I’m not sure about (A), but both B and C are true. This would mean that (D) is correct.
(6) A, B, and C, are all false, so (D) is correct

Good luck

a long sentence that i don’t understnad?

Question by A translator: a long sentence that i don’t understnad?
“Development of a transducer for in-line and through cycle monitoring
of key process and quality variables in injection molding”. i don’t understand this sentence. i am puzzled by the two prepositions,”for” and “by”. what does “in-line” mean? is it an adjective or a noun? can someone explain the whole sentence to me ?i am not a native english speaker. many thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Mommy of 2 + 1 on the way!
development of a transducer = they need someone with experience they can train
for inline and through cycle monitoring = for a line in a factory/manufacturing process and doing a job on the machine from start to finish, likely repetitive
of key process and quality variables = of an important process in the manufacturing of whatever they make …basically it has to have good quality checks and be within specs
in injection molding = the machine that the process will be on and what you’re making is on an injection molding machine, likely plastic or foam

Basically they want someone with experience they can train for their job that will pay attention to quality and effort because the part you’re responsible to make is very important. Variably speaking it will be similar parts but with slight differences. Job will likely be repetitive and boring.

You’re likely making car parts or something that is a component for another larger product.

Question by Ronbo: Venture capital, what is the typical percentage?
I have a project that is through the research process and now have the provisional patent. I have received a very do-able quote from a company that can move me to stage one production and eventually to mass production.

My question: Is there a standard percentage VC’s expect for their money? (e.g. ,000 for 25% / ,000 for 30%…)

This is for an injection molded product, nothing electronic, nothing technical. Just an easy to make, easy to assemble product

It sounds like you need to get a gasket. There are lots of kinds of gaskets, so you’re going to have to shop around. Size, pressure, temperature and materials are going to be some important factors to consider, among others.

Without more information about your machine, there isn’t much more I can help you with.
