Q&A: a long sentence about injection molding?

Question by A translator: a long sentence about injection molding?
“Development of a transducer for in-line and through cycle monitoring
of key process and quality variables in injection molding”. i don’t understand this sentence. i am puzzled by the two prepositions,”for” and “by”. what does “in-line” mean? is it an adjective or a noun? can someone explain the whole sentence to me ?i am not a native english speaker. many thanks!

This is a clumsy sentence which tries to put too much information into one sentence. It would be better split up into two or three sentences.

In a simplified form the sentence states :

“Development of a transducer for monitoring variables in injection-moulding”.

(Injection-moulding is a compound noun which requires a hyphen.)

“for” tells you what the purpose of the transducer is (“for monitoring variables”).
(I cannot see a preposition “by”)

What sort of variables does the transducer monitor ? — those variables which control the process and affect the quality of the product.

How does the transducer work ? — by monitoring the variables “in-line” (which means whilst the process is actually running) and by monitoring the variables “through-cycle” (which means from beginning to the end of the process – not just a part of it, but the whole process.)

“through-cycle” is a compound adjective, which should have a hyphen. It will have a particular meaning which applies to the particular process under discussion.

How do I profit from an idea for an improved manufacturing process? It would dramatically increase molding.?

Question by Mike: How do I profit from an idea for an improved manufacturing process? It would dramatically increase molding.?
My idea would dramatically increase the output of injection molding machines. It is preposterously simple and requires no new technology. I need to know what I can do to profit from this. Can I patent the process and sell it? If I was to implement the idea in an injection molding company (which I do not own or work for at present), I would enjoy a significant competitive advantage for a short time. However, this idea is so simple to implement it would quickly spread throught the industry, erasing the competitive advantage.

Apply for a patent. Proceed with the work needed to prepare your patent application and obtain your patent number. You will likely need the assistance of a patent attorney and their research staff to prepare the patent application, defining the process’ description and research any references to similar art.

Then offer your patent applied for / patented process technique to industry under the terms of an NDA (non-disclosure agreement)

Q&A: What are the environmental effects of the Injection Moulding Process?

Question by Opj: What are the environmental effects of the Injection Moulding Process?
Its the process used to make plastic products. They can be negative or positive effects

Best answer:

Answer by Richard
There are very few if any Environmental effect due directly to the injection molding process. Injection molding is a manufacturing process for producing parts from both thermoplastic and thermosetting plastic materials. Material is fed into a heated barrel, mixed, and forced into a mold cavity where it cools and hardens to the configuration of the mold cavity. After a product is designed, usually by an industrial designer or an engineer, molds are made by a moldmaker (or toolmaker) from metal, usually either steel or aluminum, and precision-machined to form the features of the desired part. Injection molding is widely used for manufacturing a variety of parts, from the smallest component to entire body panels of cars.

How to limit or reduce residual stress in injection moulding process?

Question by Zed: How to limit or reduce residual stress in injection moulding process?
Just try to limit the birefringence of polycarbonate that occured during the moulding process.

The main cause is the residual stress in the course of moulding, So how do I reduce this? Any idea?

Thixomolded parts are said to exhibit mechanical properties equivalent to or better than die casting , with half the porosity , and tighter part tolerances leading to reduced shrinkage , reduced residual stress and less component distortion. No foundry is required , there is no molten metal handling with its associated losses from flux , sludge or dross , and the process eliminates the use of sulphur hexafluoride , a suspected greenhouse gas which is used in magnesium foundries .

These residual stresses are mainly frozen in thermal stresses due to inhomogeneous cooling , when surface layers stiffen sooner than the core region as in free quenching. Additional factors in injection molding are the effects of melt pressure history and mechanical restraints of the mold .

Q&A: What is the typical time for a mold to open/close in an injection molding process?

Question by Will: What is the typical time for a mold to open/close in an injection molding process?
The mold is relatively small. It is only a 3 or 4 inch cube. Even a rough estimate will be fine. I’m looking for the time it takes the mold to open. And the time it would take to eject a simple part would be great too. I’m assuming it’s only a couple seconds but any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
I don’t have the machine. This is for a school project.

Why not just power it up and time it for yourself?

The specifications sheet that came with the device should tell you.
